JACKON Insulation by BEWI is consistently driving forward its sustainability strategy – with a focus on resource efficiency, increasing the proportion of recycled materials and strengthening circular solutions: since the beginning of 2025, all production at the Arendsee site has been running exclusively on electricity from renewable energy sources (News). The site has now also been successfully certified according to the REDcert² standard (https://www.redcert.org/systeme/redcert2chemie/#c5402). REDcert² is an established, voluntary certification system for the use of sustainable raw materials and recyclates in production. The JACKON Insulation by BEWI production facility in Arendsee is thus one of a total of 22 certified BEWI ASA sites. The certificate reflects the contribution to resource conservation and the promotion of the circular economy.
With immediate effect, all JACKODUR® insulation materials for construction and a wide range of industrial applications, as well as the complete JACKOBOARD® shower elements and construction board range, are now also available as REDcert²-certified variants. These are based on the use of recycled polystyrene (rPS) and combine a significantly improved carbon footprint with the usual high product quality and unchanged product properties. To achieve this, recycled polystyrene is fed into the production process and allocated to the end products. Traceable mass balancing, audited by an independent body, ensures that the total amount of REDcert2-declared products ultimately corresponds exactly to the amount of recycled material used.
Depending on the product configuration, the use of rPS can reduce the carbon footprint of the XPS material by up to 67% – a measurable contribution to climate protection without changing the processability or performance of the products.
For planners and users in construction, interior fit-out and industry, the REDcert²-certified variants offer clear added value: They can carry out their projects in a more sustainable manner while relying on the familiar properties and quality of JACKODUR® and JACKOBOARD® – an important building block on the path to greater climate protection and a circular economy in the construction industry, and a key argument in tenders, ESG reports and the decarbonisation of supply chains.
Dr Mark Plate, Head of Sustainability at JACKON Insulation by BEWI, explains: "Many of our customers face the challenge of meeting climate targets and sustainability requirements - ideally without having to give up proven solutions. This is exactly where REDcert² products come in: they offer a proven more sustainable raw material base, but can be processed as usual. This makes the transition easier and creates planning security."
The recyclable material rPS is obtained from EPS packaging or construction site offcuts. Polystyrene is one of the most recyclable polymers; its essential properties remain virtually unchanged during recycling, which means it can be recycled an unlimited number of times.
