Successful Prevention of Plastic Waste: JACKON Insulation by BEWI earns Operation Clean Sweep® Certification

29.01.2025 - Tackling plastic pollution for a cleaner environment and cleaner oceans: JACKON Insulation by BEWI has successfully completed the OCS audit process at its production facilities in Arendsee (Germany) and Olen (Belgium). OCS, or Operation Clean Sweep®, is a voluntary program in which companies commit to the sustainable and responsible handling of plastics. The certification is based on strict, external audits.

The OCS program was jointly developed by the European Plastics Converters (EuPC) and PlasticsEurope, the association of plastics manufacturers in Europe. The initiative aims to prevent the release of plastic pellets and waste into the environment. To obtain certification, companies must first sign a voluntary pledge (OSC Pledge) and then demonstrate compliance with a series of requirements for the prevention of plastic losses by undergoing an audit process. Both sites met these stringent criteria and are now officially OCS certified. The certificate is valid for three years.

Years of Commitment Honored

The audit specialists were particularly impressed on site by the fact that JACKON Insulation by BEWI has been actively addressing this issue for many years. During this time, comprehensive measures have already been taken and successive optimizations achieved. These include installing filters, safety fences, collecting trays, closed milling dust containers for the safe storage of milling dust and, most importantly, regular training to raise employee awareness.

Dr. Mark Plate, Sustainability Manager at JACKON Insulation by BEWI, emphasizes the company's commitment: “For us, the certification is confirmation that we are on exactly the right track with the numerous sustainability activities that we have been pursuing intensively for years. This also impressed the auditors. We are therefore very pleased to receive this important certificate for our two production sites.”

An Effective Standard for the Prevention of Plastic Loss

The certification program was developed in collaboration with industry experts, trade associations, non-governmental organizations, political decision-makers and certification bodies. The uniform standard is intended to ensure that the release of plastic pellets into the environment is safely prevented through continuous improvement measures.

Compliance with the OCS standard is a high priority for plastic processing companies, but also, for example, for stakeholders in the transport and logistics sectors. Plastics and microplastics do not belong in our environment, our food or our drinking water. It is imperative that pellets or plastic scraps do not find their way into the sewer system, into rivers and the world's oceans and become a serious problem for birds and marine animals. The goal of Operation Clean Sweep® is therefore to identify and permanently eliminate all sources of plastic granulate loss.

Sustainability at JACKON Insulation by BEWI

As part of a comprehensive sustainability strategy, JACKON Insulation by BEWI is adressing this challenge and taking responsibility for the careful handling of plastics. Achieving OCS certification demonstrates the company’s unwavering commitment to a more sustainable future.
