NEW: JACKODUR® LIGNIN 300 Standard – innovative thermal insulation based on lignin and recycled polystyrene for a wide range of building applications

11.09.2026 - With JACKODUR® LIGNIN, JACKON Insulation by BEWI is introducing a new generation of insulation material that combines a more resource-efficient raw material base with high technical performance. The innovative polymer foam is made solely from the biopolymer lignin and recycled polystyrene. As no fossil primary raw material is used in production, the manufacture of JACKODUR® LIGNIN is associated with a significantly reduced CO₂ footprint compared with conventional JACKODUR®.

This is verified in an EPD in accordance with EN 15804. JACKODUR® LIGNIN is fully recyclable when collected separately by material type. The new product is now available for key building applications such as insulation under screed, cavity wall insulation in twin-leaf masonry, over-rafter insulation, internal insulation and external wall insulation behind cladding.

Modern insulation materials are expected not only to contribute to improved energy efficiency in buildings, but also to conserve resources, reduce emissions and deliver convincing environmental performance across their entire life cycle through to recycling. The polymer foam JACKODUR® LIGNIN 300 Standard, available in thicknesses from 50 to 200 mm, fully meets these requirements and opens up new possibilities for thermal insulation based on non-fossil primary raw materials.

Insulation with a reduced CO₂ footprint, made from lignin and recycled materials

The innovation consists of lignin, a plant-based by-product of wood processing that is available in large quantities as a renewable raw material, together with high-quality, carefully selected recycled polystyrene. Combined with the use of electricity from renewable energy sources in production, this raw material base contributes to a significantly reduced CO₂ footprint.

In addition to its environmental benefits, thermal insulation must also meet demanding technical requirements across a wide variety of applications. JACKODUR® LIGNIN stands for high compressive strength, low weight, durability and very good thermal insulation properties, with a declared thermal conductivity of λD = 0.032 W/(m∙K). This positions the product as an environmentally conscious solution for modern construction projects.

Available for numerous applications

JACKODUR® LIGNIN 300 Standard is being launched for several fields of application. Under screed, the thermal insulation makes full use of its strengths across the entire area: compressive stability, low build-up heights and a robust base for subsequent fit-out. In cavity wall insulation for twin-leaf masonry, the focus is on the combination of insulating performance and permanently stable material behaviour – for constructions designed for long-term durability under heavy weather exposure.

In roof applications, the material is used for over-rafter insulation. Here, alongside its energy performance, reliable integration into the roof build-up is particularly important, helping to reduce thermal bridges and enabling roof structures to be modernised or newly built efficiently. As internal insulation, the new product also covers applications where the external envelope should not or cannot be altered, while an improvement in energy efficiency is still required. The material is also suitable for external wall insulation behind cladding, such as timber cladding.

Environmental values transparently documented – with Environmental Product Declaration

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with EN 15804 is available for JACKODUR® LIGNIN. It transparently documents the product’s environmental balance and can be used in planning and tendering processes. There is also another aspect that plays a key role indoors: the insulation material does not emit harmful substances, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), into the indoor air and supports a healthy indoor climate.

Contribution to sustainable construction and modernisation

With this new product, JACKON Insulation by BEWI is consistently continuing its commitment to developing more sustainable building products. The company is sending a clear signal in favour of solutions that combine energy-efficient construction and modernisation with a future-ready materials strategy. In this way, the product supports construction projects in which documented material selection and the reduction of fossil primary raw materials are key priorities.
