Belgium's first circular office building: JACKODUR® enables high energy efficiency

04.08.2023 - The architects and investors of `t Centrum in Westerlo, Belgium, had set the bar high: All materials used in the office building should be completely degradable and recyclable. Mission accomplished! This makes `t Centrum the first building in Belgium to consistently meet the requirements of the circular economy 100 per cent. An important component of this groundbreaking concept is the JACKODUR® insulation material from JACKON by BEWI.

JACKODUR®: Efficient, durable, and recyclable

JACKODUR® combines a multitude of advantages: The material is insensitive to moisture, thermally insulating, pressure-resistant – and fully recyclable after many decades of use. For this reason, the building contractor decided to use JACKODUR® KF 300 for the insulation in the plinth area under the window parapets to meet the high energy-related and sustainable requirements of the planning. The product is ideally suited for sustainable thermal insulation to reduce the energy loss of buildings. Thermal bridges are effectively avoided and comfort as well as interior temperatures are optimized. Due to the water-repellent properties, JACKODUR® can also be used in areas with high moisture loads, such as the underside of facades.

A catalyst for circular building

The new building belongs to Kamp C, the provincial Centre for Sustainability and Innovation in Construction in Westerlo. The project is a joint effort by Kamp C and a consortium of 7 companies and organizations. "Adaptability and flexibility are crucial when you want to future-proof buildings. With `t Centrum, Kamp C shows how to put this into practice. It is a prime example of how future builders can respond to changing ecological, spatial and functional insights," says Kathleen Helsen, president of Kamp C. Thanks to its well-thought-out circular design and a conscious choice of materials, techniques and innovative business models, the building should become a catalyst for circular building in Flanders and beyond.

Sustainable and ecological construction

The office building at Kamp C has three floors and a total area of 2 400 sqm. The construction is based on a grid of 5 by 5 meters. Each component is coordinated so that the building requires as few different elements as possible. For example, the main supporting structure consists of columns, beams and ceiling elements made of solid multi-layered timber, so-called CLT or Cross Laminated Timber.
